KEY PRINCIPLES FOR PARENTS

What Is Mental Toughness?

Mental toughness is the ability to perform under pressure, bounce back from failure, and maintain confidence through adversity. It’s not something players are born with—it’s trained, just like hitting or pitching.

At Canes New England, we integrate mental skills training into every practice and game. But the real work happens at home. You are your son’s most important mental skills coach.

  1. Focus on Effort & Process, Not Results
    What to say: - “I loved how you stayed aggressive at the plate.” - “You competed hard today—that’s what matters.” - “Your preparation showed up in that at-bat.”

    Avoid: - “You should have had that hit.” - “Why didn’t you make that play?” - “You’re better than that.” 

  1. Avoid Pressure & ComparisonWhat to say: - “Go have fun and compete.” - “Just do your best—that’s all we ask.”

    Avoid: - “You need to get a hit today.” - “Look how well [teammate] is doing.” - “College coaches are watching—don’t mess up.” 

  1. Model Healthy BoundariesWhat to do: - Follow the 24-hour rule - Let coaches coach - Trust the process - Stay positive in the stands

    Avoid: - Coaching from the stands - Questioning coaching decisions immediately after games - Negative body language or criticism 

  1. Celebrate Mental Wins
    What to celebrate: - Bouncing back after a strikeout - Staying positive after an error - Competing hard in a tough at-bat - Supporting teammates
  1. Support During Adversity
    What to say: - “Everyone goes through slumps. Let’s figure it out together.” - “I’m proud of how you’re handling this.” - “What can I do to help?”
    Avoid: - “What’s wrong with you?” - “You’re not trying hard enough.” - “Maybe baseball isn’t for you.”
THE 24-HOUR RULE

What Is It?

After every game, wait 24 hours before discussing performance, coaching decisions, or outcomes with your son or coaches.

Why It Matters

Emotions run high immediately after games—for players, parents, and coaches. The 24-hour rule gives everyone time to process, reflect, and approach conversations with clarity and perspective.

How to Use It

Immediately After the Game: - “I love watching you play.” - “You competed hard today.” - “Want to grab food?”

After 24 Hours (If Needed): - “How do you feel about yesterday’s game?” - “What did you learn?” - “Is there anything you want to work on?”

When to Break the Rule

If there’s a safety concern, behavioral issue, or emergency, address it immediately. Otherwise, wait.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE AT Home

Confidence-Building Questions

Ask these questions regularly to reinforce effort, growth, and mental toughness:

After Practice: - “What did you do well today?” - “What’s one thing you improved?” - “What are you working on next?”

After Games: - “What are you proud of from today?” - “What did you learn?” - “How did you compete?”

During Slumps: - “What’s one thing you can control right now?” - “What’s your plan for the next at-bat/pitch?” - “How can I support you?”

What NOT to Ask

  • “Why didn’t you get a hit?”
  • “What happened on that play?”
  • “Are you even trying?”
RECOGNIZING & SUPPORTING MENTAL FATIGUE

Signs Your Player Is Mentally Fatigued

  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Loss of enthusiasm for baseball
  • Difficulty focusing or making decisions
  • Physical fatigue despite adequate rest
  • Increased anxiety or self-doubt

How to Support

Create Space for Rest - Allow downtime away from baseball - Encourage other hobbies and interests - Prioritize sleep and recovery

Listen Without Fixing - “I hear you. That sounds tough.” - “What do you need right now?” - Avoid immediately jumping to solutions

Reframe the Pressure - “Baseball is important, but it’s not everything.” - “We love you no matter what happens on the field.”

Communicate With Coaches - Let us know if your son is struggling mentally - We can adjust workload, provide support, or have a conversation

SLUMP BUSTERS

What Is a Slump?

A slump is a temporary period of poor performance. Every player experiences slumps—it’s part of the game.

How to Help

Normalize It - “Every great player goes through slumps. This is temporary.” - “Even MLB players struggle. You’re not alone.”

Focus on Controllables - “What’s your approach at the plate?” - “Are you sticking to your routine?” - “What can you control right now?”

Reinforce Effort - “I love how you’re competing through this.” - “Your work ethic is impressive.”

Avoid Adding Pressure - Don’t mention the slump constantly - Don’t suggest extra hitting lessons every day - Don’t compare to other players

Trust the Process - Coaches are working with your son - Slumps are opportunities to build mental toughness - Growth happens in adversity

POST-GAME COMMUNICATION GUIDE

Immediately After the Game (0-2 Hours)

DO: - Hug your son - Say “I love watching you play” - Ask “Are you hungry?” or “Want to talk?” - Let him lead the conversation

DON’T: - Critique performance - Ask “What happened on that play?” - Compare to teammates - Discuss coaching decisions

The Next Day (24+ Hours)

DO: - Ask open-ended questions (“How do you feel about yesterday?”) - Listen more than you talk - Focus on effort and process - Offer support (“What can I do to help?”)

DON’T: - Lecture or criticize - Bring up every mistake - Pressure for immediate improvement

CREATING CONFIDENCE

What Confidence Looks Like

Confidence isn’t arrogance—it’s trust in your preparation and ability to compete. Confident players: - Take aggressive swings - Bounce back quickly from failure - Compete without fear of mistakes - Trust their training

How to Build It at Home

Celebrate Effort Over Outcomes - “You battled in that at-bat—I’m proud of you.” - “Your approach was great today.”

Reframe Failure - “Failure is feedback. What did you learn?” - “Every great player fails. It’s how you respond that matters.”

Model Resilience - Share your own failures and how you overcame them - Show that setbacks are normal and temporary

Avoid Conditional Love - “I love you no matter what happens on the field.” - “Your value isn’t tied to your batting average.”

Encourage Visualization - “Picture yourself succeeding before you step in the box.” - “What does success look like for you today?”
